Harnessing the Power of Sage and Palo Santo Sticks: A Guide to Proper Usage

Sage and Palo Santo sticks have been used for centuries in various cultures for their cleansing, purifying, and spiritual properties. Whether you're looking to clear negative energies, enhance meditation practices, or simply enjoy their soothing aromas, understanding the proper usage of these sacred tools is essential. In this blog, we'll explore how to use Sage and Palo Santo sticks effectively to maximise their benefits.

Sage: is widely recognised for its cleansing properties. The smoke from burning sage is believed to remove negative energy and purify spaces, objects, and even individuals. Here's how to use sage properly:

  • Gather your supplies: You'll need a bundle of dried sage, a heatproof container (such as an abalone shell or ceramic dish), and a lighter or matches.

  • Set your intention: Before you begin, take a moment to focus your intention. What energy or negativity are you seeking to clear? Visualise the space or object being purified and imbued with positive energy.

  • Ignite the sage: Light one end of the sage bundle and allow it to catch fire. Let it burn for a few seconds, then gently blow out the flame, allowing the sage to smolder and produce smoke.

  • Begin the cleansing process: Hold the smoldering end of the sage bundle over the container to catch any falling embers. Start at the entrance of the space or object you wish to cleanse and move in a clockwise direction, gently waving the smoke around.

  • Be thorough and mindful: Pay special attention to corners, doorways, windows, and any areas that may hold stagnant energy. While wafting the smoke, maintain a focused and positive mindset, envisioning the negative energy dissipating and being replaced by positivity.

  • Extinguish the sage: Once you have completed the smudging, gently tap the smoldering end of the sage bundle in the container to extinguish the embers. Ensure it is fully extinguished before storing it.

Palo Santo: also known as "holy wood," originates from South America and is renowned for its calming and uplifting properties. It is often used to promote relaxation, enhance meditation, and invite positive energy into a space. Here's how to use Palo Santo properly:
  • Gather your supplies: You'll need a Palo Santo stick and a lighter or matches.

  • Set your intention: Similar to sage, take a moment to focus your intention before you begin. Decide what energy or purpose you seek to invite with Palo Santo.

  • Ignite the stick: Hold one end of the Palo Santo stick to the flame, allowing it to catch fire. Let it burn for about 30 seconds, then blow out the flame, leaving the stick smoldering and releasing aromatic smoke.

  • Move mindfully: Hold the smoldering end of the stick and move it in a clockwise direction around the space or over your body. Alternatively, you can gently fan the smoke towards yourself or areas that need purification.

  • Enjoy the aroma: Palo Santo emits a sweet, woodsy scent that can enhance relaxation and meditation. Take a moment to appreciate the aroma and allow it to create a tranquil atmosphere.

  • Extinguish the stick: Once you have completed the process, place the smoldering end of the Palo Santo stick in a fireproof container or allow it to naturally extinguish on its own. Ensure it is fully extinguished before leaving it unattended.

When using sage and Palo Santo sticks, it's important to approach the process with respect, intention, and mindfulness. These sacred tools can be powerful allies in cleansing and purifying spaces, objects, and individuals.
